Encourage Journaling Early

Journaling is a place to record experiences, impressions, and awareness. Any of those can be shared in drawings, not just words. Journaling can begin at a young age. Guidance through questions and prompts is needed for the youngest journals, but that guidance can be minimized as the journal grows older and becomes more familiar with the process.*

Starter Journals For Kids

Check out our Me By Me Books starter journals for ages 6-11. The younger ages start with more drawings and short writing responses. More writing is encouraged as the your journaler progresses in their journey

What If Anne Frank's Parents Hadn't Gifted Her a Journal For Her 13th Birthday?

What we might learn if we could follow a remarkable mind before anyone knew it was remarkable.

On June 12, 1942, Anne Frank turned thirteen. Among her birthday presents was a red-and-white checkered diary she had wanted and helped choose. Her mother bought it for her, and Anne later described it as one of her nicest gifts.

Knowing what we know now, it is tempting to see that moment as though history depended on it. What if Anne Frank’s parents had not given her that journal? Would we have lost her story?

Probably not.

Anne Frank’s diary did not create Anne Frank. It did not give her intelligence, sensitivity, curiosity, courage, or talent. She almost certainly would have found another way to write if that particular diary had never been given to her.

But the gift mattered. Someone who loved her put the right tool in her hands and gave her somewhere to begin.

We can do the same.

What If Albert Einstein Had Kept Journals From His Early Childhood Through Adulthood?

What we might learn if we could follow a remarkable mind before anyone knew it was remarkable.

We usually learn about influential people after we already know how their stories turned out. We look back at their childhoods, searching for the experiences, interests, questions, and small moments that might explain who they eventually became.

But what if we did not have to reconstruct those early years later?

What if we encouraged children to preserve some of those moments while they were actually living them?

Albert Einstein gives us an interesting way to imagine what we might have gained.

One Question Unlocks a Lifetime of Stories

How We Design Our Prompts

Memories don’t sit on a shelf waiting to be retrieved. They return in pieces — through a place, a season, a small ordinary detail.

That’s why our prompts are gentle and open. Instead of telling you what to remember, they help you step back into a moment and let what matters surface.

We don’t try to fill in the past.
We create the space for it to meet you again.
